Feature FAQs
Is BrightWall™ supported?
BrightWall™ for BrightSign Author is on the roadmap but has not yet been implemented. We have improved video wall creation tools in BrightSign Author, and you can find that information at Create a VideoWall.
BrightWall™ is available for use in versions 3.8.0.x or later.
Are custom splash screens supported?
Custom splash screens are not available in the current version of BrightSign Author but are available in .
Is geofencing available?
Yes. Geofencing is available as of BrightSign Author version 1.32.0. To use Geofencing on a BrightSign player, see this How-to.
Can you overlay text or images on video?
Yes. All BrightSign players (except the HD600) support this.
- Image files that are displayed in a Video or Image or Image zone will automatically display over video zones.
- Use a Live Text State to layer text over a video in an Image or Video or Image zone (it cannot be used in a Ticker zone). The Live Text State also lets you switch between one or more text fields with background images.
- You can layer text over an image by placing a Ticker Zone over an Image zone.
Can text & RSS feeds be displayed?
Text and RSS can be displayed as static, animated, or scrolling text within a Ticker Zone. The video in the linked page provides a tutorial on this and other methods of displaying text. This feature is also available in BrightScript via the roTextWidget object and JavaScript via the BSTicker object.
How do I create a playlist?
See this page for information on how to build a Simple or Advanced playlist.
How does Media List shuffling work?
If you enable the Shuffle playback option in a Media List State, the playlist will shuffle upon entering the media list state when it’s at the beginning of the list. If you are manually advancing through a media list using interactive input, then the playlist shuffles the Media List when it reaches the end of the list. It is also possible to advance to the next file in the list.
The Media List state is only available for use in an Advanced Zone.
Can I ignore input in Advanced playlist?
In a BrightSign Author Advanced Zone, all input (for example, a button press) is automatically ignored unless it is manually defined in BrightSign Author. For an example of how to define input, see Create GPIO Input.
Can I rename my presentation?
You should always rename your presentation in BrightSign Author (use Save As... in the File menu). If you try to rename the presentation by renaming the .bpfx file on the desktop (as you would any other file), it will cause the player to continuously reboot.
How to resize images for playback?
There are many applications and utilities that are available for editing and converting images. VSO Image Resizer, for example, does batch conversions.
See this page for information on supported image resolutions for your player. You can increase the maximum allowed width of images by sacrificing height, or increase the maximum width/height by reducing the bpp value. For example, you could use a 4096x640x32bpp or a 4096x1280x16bpp image on non-4K players.
Can a UDP command trigger playback of specified audio files?
Yes, you can do this either through BrightSign Author or a script.
The UDP Event in BrightSign Author triggers when a player receives a matching UDP message string on a state with a UDP transition event attached to it. When the <any> wildcard string is defined in a UDP transition event attached to an On Demand State, it is possible to trigger playback of any media files added inside that state that match the key value of the received UDP message. See this page for information on how to set this up.
Alternatively, you could write a standalone or plugin script using these two objects:
- roDatagramReceiver: Receives UDP packets; received packets are delivered to the message port as roDatagramEvent.
- roAudioPlayer: Plays back audio files asynchronously, so the script can continue running while audio plays and roAudioEvent are delivered to the message port.
Whatever device receives the UDP command must be listening on the specified port and must be able to parse the message format you define via roDatagramReceiver.
Can I update content remotely?
Yes. BrightSign Author allows you to organize your players into groups and schedule content to be deployed to one or more groups at the same time (or on different dates at different times).
Web Folder Setup allows multiple players to check the same folder on your remote web server for content updates. To update your players using this method, publish changes locally in BrightSign Author, then transfer those changes to your web server.
